Things to Do
Let’s dig right into Charlestown’s dining scene with the Warren Tavern, a spot where locals and tourists alike hang out to soak up the colonial charm and historic vibes. In fact, it’s the longest-standing tavern in the state! You can also visit Pier 6 for laidback waterfront dining, or stop by Monument, a gastropub that dishes up some of Charlestown’s best wood-fired pizzas.
Charlestown oozes history and offers museums and monuments all along the Freedom Trail. First up is the Charlestown Navy Yard, a community treasure where you’ll visit one of the oldest navy shipyards in the country, get a close-up look at some warships, and wander the factory, which is now a museum. Another incredible ode to history is the Bunker Hill Monument, a 221-foot obelisk that marks the Battle of Bunker Hill and works in tandem with the Bunker Hill Museum to teach visitors about what exactly happened that historic day.
Charlestown also has an annual holiday for the Battle of Bunker Hill, known as Bunker Hill Day. Every third weekend of June, residents from far and wide gather in Charlestown to mark the anniversary. Schools and government offices are closed in honor of the holiday, and locals flock to observe an amazing battle reenactment and parade. Moving onto a spookier holiday, Halloween is a huge part of Charlestown’s community culture. And it’s not just a one-day thing — you could spend the entire month going on ghost tours, attending parties and pub crawls, and watching the parade in your scariest attire.
